Il fut le petit-fils de Romain Argyre.
1028, par son mariage avec Zoé, il devint empereur byzantin.
1029, il dut lutter contre sa belle-soeur Théodora et le stratège (chef d'armée) Pressiyan.
1030, il décida de rehausser son prestige en se lançant dans une campagne militaire contre les Mirdassides d’Alep, mais à peine arrivé, ses troupes furent défaites par les Fatimides qui avaient entre-temps envahi le territoire et tué l’émir ; humilié, il retourna à Constantinople et se consacra à la construction de somptueux édifices.
1034, il fut empoisonné ou étouffé dans son bain par son épouse Zoé qui épousa Michel dit le Paphlagonien, son amant qui monta sur le trône sous le nom de Michel IV.
